Therapy: Method, History, Issues Flashcards
How is it possible to study the effectiveness of treatments?
Clinical trial/randomised control trials (RCTs), filed experiment with radom allocation, blind procedures and placebo/other control conditions
What are Cochrane reviews?
Cochrane Collaboration are independent medical organisation, reviews and meta analyses of medical treatments, less likely to be biased
What is the file drawer problem?
Studies often not published, especially if funded by drug companies, no compulsion to publish trials so lots of data remains unpublished
What were the early biological treatments for schizophrenia?
largely attempts to control/pacify patients, middle 20thC = ECT lobotomies, 1950 typical antipsychotics developed like chlorpromazine: serious side effects, later atypical anti-psychotics like clozapine = less side effects
What is current clinical practise in the UK for schizophrenic patients?
National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) provide guidelines: patients should be offered drug treatment, CBT, and (where appropriate) family intervention, ECT only used for catatonic and suicidal patients

How should treatments be described in an exam?
U: uses -what disorder is it for?, R: rationale -what is the theory and how does this work?, A: aim, P: process -how does the therapy/drug work
How is the effective of a treatment measured?
effect on symptoms, relapse, length - what is the evidence for this?
How is appropriateness measured for treatments?
side effects, ethical issues, cost, the wants of the patient
