- client in reality testing
1) dysfunctional thought diary - record negative thoughts and rate them, then write rational thought and rate it
2) cognitive restructuring - therapy during therapy to challenge automatic thoughts e.g. where is the evidence?
3) pleasant activity scheduling - plan one activity per day, recording it and reflecting on change if it didn’t go well

A
✅effective in treating depression and anxiety, widely used by NHS
✅ client free will to develop own coping strategies
❌ not suitable for all, individual differences

❌victim blame, not everything can be changed e.g. family problem
❌could damage self esteem
