PSYCHOSURGERY: PREFRONTAL LOBOTOMY

- performed on disorders (depression, OCD) but severity mattered more than type
- destruction of nerve fibres in frontal lobe by drilling hole and using icepick

A
- MRI scan for accuracy
- cingulotomy - burn tissue with beams of radiation (gamma knife)
- capsulotomy - insert probes top of scull to burn tiny portions of tissue

- alterative to psychosurgery
- no tissue destruction and temp
- wires thread through skull with adjustable high frequencies that interrupt brain circuity

A
✅ DBS evolving and can tell info other methods cant e.g. EEG says when activity happens not where
❌ limited as not used for phobias or schitzo, only for extreme cases
❌ early psychosurgery = inappropriate as 6% fatality rate

PSYCHOSURGERY: ETHICS
A
❌ cant be reversed and have many risks e.g. brain seizures, lack of emotion
❌ those with mental disorders cant necessarily consent
