Raine Flashcards
1
Q
METHOD
A
- quasi matched pairs
- IV = NGRI or not / DV = brain differences
- 41 murderers pleaded with NGRI (39 men 2 women) all had mental illnesses e.g. 6 schitzo
- control group = matched age/gender, most had no mental illness, schitzo matched with schitzo
2
Q
PROCEDURE
A
- opportunity sample
- practice CPT beforehand
- injected with tracer 30s after starting CPT
- 32m after injection, PET scan to record 10 horizontal slices of brain
3
Q
FINDINGS
A
- abnormal asymmetries
- reduced activity in areas linked to violence e.g. prefrontal cortex, left hemi hippocampus
- increased activity in areas not linked e.g. cerebellum. right hemi amygdala
- no difference between NGRI and control group e.g. putamen and midbrain
4
Q
CONC
A
- murderers have diff functioning to non murderers
- supports previous research linking brain and aggression
- BUT DOESNT MEAN that NGRI arnt responsible for actions or that violence is determined by biology alone
