Why are children a special group for drugs?
Risk of toxicity increased by reduced rate of drug clearance
Differing target organ sensitivity
Dose usually calculated on body weight or surface area
Some medications should be avoided completely eg:
Aspirin - causes Reye’s syndrome
Tetracycline - interferes with bones and teeth

Which abx do you not prescribe in children?
Tetracyclines - teeth staining
Quinolones - tendon damage
What should not be given to asthmatics?
Beta blockers - exacerbates bronchoconstriction
Common side effects of calcium channel blockers
Headache, flushing, ankle swelling
What drugs should be stopped when prescribing clarithromycin?
Statins - greater risk of muscle pain/ damage
Which drink should be avoided when taking statins?
Grapefruit juice
