Why are children a special group for drugs?

A

Risk of toxicity increased by reduced rate of drug clearance
Differing target organ sensitivity
Dose usually calculated on body weight or surface area
Some medications should be avoided completely eg:
Aspirin - causes Reye’s syndrome
Tetracycline - interferes with bones and teeth
