Reflections
Reflect or mirror client’s words, feelings, meanings and/or thoughts. They are short, frequent summaries of information or feelings, and can be restatements.
What is the purpose of reflections?
- active listenting
- communicates to clients your understanding of what they say
- allows clients to correct you if your understanding is not accurate
- encourage further elaboration/clarification
- used effectively, reflections display and convey warmth, empathy, and genuineness
Types of reflections (3)
- content- what was said/information conveyed
- emotion- client’s feelings
- meaning- the underlying point of deeper meaning of what was said
What type of inflection should be used in a reflection?
Go down at the end like an assertion, instead of up, like a question
Types of nonverbal communication
Eye contact, body language, vocal tone, physical space, timing
How is nonverbal communication used as a therapeutic tool?
- to demonstrate active listening
- to encourage further elaboration/clarification
- to display and convey warmth, genuineness and empathy.
What are some cultural differences in nonverbal communication?
In Western countries, eye contact communicates interest, attention, confidence. In Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, Native American cultures, it may be interpreted as rude, offensive, or a sign of sexual interest.
Proxemics also differ culturally.
Open question
Cannot be answered with yes or no. Minimizes our own perspective and encourages client to lead.
Ex: What was that like for you?
Closed question to open question: Are you married? v. Who are the important people in your life?
Minimal encouragers
“Say more about that”
“Go on”
“I see”
Scaling question
A scaling question aims to identify the level or intensity of a problem.
Ex: You mentioned you’ve experienced depression in the past. How severe is your depression now, on a 1-10 scale where 10 is the most depressed you’ve ever felt and 1 is not depressed at all?
Miracle question
Asking the miracle question uncovers insight into the core issue, gathers key indicators about positive change, and promotes client’s visualization of resolution/progress/change.
Ex: If a miracle happened and you woke up tomorrow and this problem was solved, how would things be different?
What are the overall goals our therapeutic techniques aim to accomplish?
- listening with an open, nonjudgmental stance
- conveying genuine interest in client perspective and experience
- avoid jumping to conclusions/assumptions
