Q

What role do client expectations play in the effectiveness of therapy?

A

Expectations of patients about whether they are likely to benefit from psychotherapy affect how successful the treatment will be.

Lambert estimates that at least 15% of the improvement in psychotherapy patients is attributable to expectancy effects.

A patient who expects to improve may be more likely to engage constructively in the treatment process-including developing a collaborative, affiliative bond with the therapist.
