Moving dependent pt. upward in bed while in supine (7 steps)
A
- Bring pt close to your side
- Assist pt. in positioning knees in flexion w/ feet flat on bed (bridging)
- Encourage to push with elbow and feet when moving
- Hug pt. under scapula, moving in short distances and repositioning
- Use draw sheet to move pt. in bed to reduce sheer force
- When pt. is moved upward: head of bed should be down
- When pt. is moved downward: head of the bed should be up.

Supine to Side Lying (5)
A
- Assist pt. in positioning opposite leg in hip and knee flexion (ie. roll to right, bend left leg)
- Place same side arm in straight ABD
- Place opposite arm across chest
- Assist in rolling the pt. toward you encouraging him to push w/ opposite hip and foot (block edge of the bed w/ your body for safety)
- Guide by supporting and moving opposite shoulder/scapula and hip towards you.

Side to Side Movement (4)
A
- Place one forearm under pts. neck and upper back and other forearm under the middle of the back
- Gently slide the upper body and head towards you.
- DO NOT LIFT
- Move in short distances and reposition

Supine to sitting and back (5)
A
- Move pt. close to edge of the bed
- Flex hips and knees
- Fold arms over chest
- Position opposite palm onto bed and encourage to push up to sitting as you sequentially elevate the pts. trunk until a sitting position is attained.
- Do not allow pt. to sit unattended (monitor for loss of balance, syncope, vertigo)
