Denotative Meaning

Connotative Meaning
Interpretation of the meaning of a word is influenced by thoughts; feelings, or ideas that people have about a word
Paralanguage
Verbal Styles that influence communication like pacing ( fast or Slow) and or intonation (tone)
Clarity and Brevity
effective communication is simple, brief, and direct
Timing and relevance
Messages should be relevant t the situation at hand
Body Language
facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, posture, sounds, and touch
Therapeutic Use of Self
who the nurse is to the patient; how you present yourself, and how the patient perceives how you present themselves
Phases Of a Therapeutic Relationship
pre-interaction, orientation, working phase, termination
Therapeutic Communication skills
active listening, empathy, minimal ques, clarification, restatement, paraphrasing, reflection, summarization and validation, providing information (be specific), silence (with nonverbal), touch, humor
