Therapeutic Modalities Flashcards
2 types of compression:
Static and intermittent
Static compression
Used to shape residual limbs, control edema, prevent abnormal scar formation, and reduce the risk of DVT
Examples of static compression devices include:
compression bandages and compression garments
Compression bandages function
Increase external pressure on a body part by exerting resting pressure and working pressure
Types of compression bandages
Longstretch, short stretch, multi-layered, and semi-rigid bandages
Compression garments
Provide varying degrees of resting pressure and working pressure through elasticity. Most often worn to control edema, limit scar formation after burns, and improve venous circulation in active pts
Compression
Works to keep venous and lymphatic flow from pooling in the venous system and interstitial space
Compression garments offer ________ pressure for
20-30 mmHg for scar tissue control
30-40 mmHg for edema control
Off the shelf compression garments
16-18 mmHg to prevent DVT for pts on bed rest
Small vs large electrodes:
P. 384
Small- inc current density and impedance, dec flow
Large - deck current density and impedance, inc flow
