Therapeutic Mechanisms Of HBO Flashcards
0
Q
Why is increased pressure important in HBOT?
A
Increased pressure shrinks bubbles (Boyle’s Law) which forces inert gases back into solution so body can rid itself of the gas through its normal mechanisms
1
Q
2 things HBOT accomplishes
A
Increases pressure and increased oxygen
2
Q
Why is increased oxygen important in HBOT
A
Plasma hyper-oxygenates which causes: Increased diffusion distance of oxygen from arterioles from 64-247 microns (4xs) Angiogenesis Vasoconstriction Decreased reperfusion injury Improved WBC fxn Decreased alpha toxin production Increased pressure gradient of inert gases
3
Q
How does HBOT decrease reperfusion injury?
A
Causes vasoconstriction which decreases edema
Provides additional oxygen to stop ischemic tissue death
Reduce WBC adherence to endothelium of vessels which would reduce blood flow
4
Q
What bacteria will stop producing alpha toxin at what tissue PO2?
A
Clostrida perfringens, 250 mmHg
