Therapeutic Mechanisms Of HBO Flashcards

Q

Why is increased pressure important in HBOT?

A

Increased pressure shrinks bubbles (Boyle’s Law) which forces inert gases back into solution so body can rid itself of the gas through its normal mechanisms

Q

Why is increased oxygen important in HBOT

A
Plasma hyper-oxygenates which causes:
Increased diffusion distance of oxygen from arterioles from 64-247 microns (4xs)
Angiogenesis
Vasoconstriction
Decreased reperfusion injury
Improved WBC fxn
Decreased alpha toxin production
Increased pressure gradient of inert gases

Q

How does HBOT decrease reperfusion injury?

A

Causes vasoconstriction which decreases edema

Provides additional oxygen to stop ischemic tissue death

Reduce WBC adherence to endothelium of vessels which would reduce blood flow
