TCP/ip
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet protocol
Defines how electronic devices should be connected over the Internet and how data should be transmitted between them
FTP
File transfer protocol.. A standard network protocol used to transfer computer files from one host to another over a network
Http
Hypertext transfer protocol.defines how messages we to be formatted and transmitted, and what response web servers and browsers make to certain commands
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. A set of commands that authenticate and direct the transfer of electronic mail
Internet
Massive network of networks with connect millions of computers together globally. It is where computers connect to the Internet can communicate with one another
Www
A system of interlinked hypertext documents and other sources linked by hyperlinks and URLS
What is the difference between www and the Internet
The Internet is a global data communications system, the web is a service communicated via the Internet
IP address
A number which uniquely identifies each device on the Internet
URL
The address of a particular webpage or other element of content on the Internet
Domain name
A unique name that identifies an Internet site
Data packet
Basic unit of communication over a digital network. When data is transmitted it is broke down into smaller structures of data which are reassembled to the original data chunk once they reach their destination. Contains IP address of origin, destination IP address, data and error protocol
ISP
A company which provides access to the Internet for a fee
Web browser
A program used to view, download upload surf or access pages on the www
Search engine
An information retrieval system designed to search for information stored on the WWW
Hits
Number of search engine results for a specific query
Keyword search
A search for documents containing one or more words specified by a user in a search engine box
Cookie
A piece of text stored by a users web browser to personalise web pages
Cache
Stores recently used information in a place where it can be accessed extremely fast
Encryption
Process of scrambling and transforming data from plain text to cipher text so it can’t be understood by outsiders
Firewall
An electronic security barrier to prevent outsiders getting into a computer or network, can a,so be used to prevent people from getting out of a computer or network
Anti virus software
Used to prevent, detect and remove malware
Viruses
Small programs or scripts that can negatively affect the health of your computer by creating files
Username
A name that uniquely identifies someone on a computer system
Password
A string of characters for authenticating a user on a computer system
A method of exchanging digital messages across the Internet or other computer networks
Email address
A name that uniquely identifies an electronic post office box on a network where emails can be sent
HTML
A programming language for designing or viewing webpages
Website
A set of related webpages served from a single web domain
Css
An external document which can be linked into HTML documents that defines the style, design and layout of the webpage.

An element in an electronic document that links to another place.
