Theory: Internet Terms and Html Flashcards
What’s a network?
A collection of computers and devices connected together with communication devices (network cards) and transmission media (cables, microwaves) allowing the sharing of resources.
Is the WWW same as the Internet
The web (WWW) is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet.
It is an information sharing model that is built on top of the Internet, it is a massive collection of digital pages.
Describe Dial Up connection
A modem and telephone line is required
Slower and less reliable (will disconnect after a certain time)
The slowest overall connection speeds.
Most secure because you could cut it off and there was no access.
Can’t use the landline…. Takes up all the data.
Describe Broadband
Cable and DSL (digital subscriber line, way the data is being transferred)
Cable connection – user must subscribe to a service (cable-television/Internet)
Allows the user to stay connected to the Internet at all times
Describe Wi-Fi
Wireless fidelity, 802.11
Allows users to have mobile connections, accessing the web where and when they need.
Emits radio waves to transmit information across a network.
To connect wirelessly, a device must have a wireless adapter that will translate data sent into a radio signal. The same signal will be transmitter, via an antenna, to a decode known as the router. Once decoded, the data will be sent to the Internet through a wired Ethernet connection.
What is the Internet Service Provider?
An organisation that provides access to the Internet for a fee.
Examples, iPrimus, Optus, Dodo and BigPond
What is a web browser?
A software program that allows users to access and view web pages
Examples: Internet Explorer, chrome, Firefox, Safari
Web Browsers – Display websites, link to other web pages, download information
What is the IP address?
The number that uniquely identifies each computer on the Internet.
IP address: 167.80.146.00
What is a protocol?
Protocol refers to the rules that ensue the orderly and accurate transmission and receiving of data.
What are packets?
Each packet contains the data, the recipient (destination) the origin (sender)
Each packet travels along the fastest individual available path to the recipients computer
As the packets arrive at their destination they are reassembled into a replica of the original file.
What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol
When FTP appears in a URL the user is connecting to a file server and not a web server
Used to upload and download files
FTP server is the computer from which files are uploaded or downloaded
What is SMTP.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
The standard used for outgoing mail
What is the Internet?
A worldwide system that connects millions of computers together globally.
