Theory Of Planned Behaviour Flashcards
Strength: RTS HAGGAR et al
Asked 486 ppts to complete a questionnaire on alcohol related behaviours at start of research and three months later, found that personal attitudes and subjective norms correlated significantly with intention to limit drinking to match guidelines, control predicted actual unit consumption, increasing its validity in explaining behaviour change, supports TPB as 3 components interact to affect individuals intention to stop, inc validity
Weakness discussion: social desirability
Rts relied on questionnaires so prone to social desirability bias, individuals lie about intentions towards addiction to present themselves in a better light, intend to drink within guidelines to avoid being judged, reduces validity of RTS
Strength: practical applications
Principles of TBP used to predict who will be successful with CBT, if missing one of the components (attitudes) they won’t have the intention to change so won’t be offered therapy, benefits the economy as NHS prioritise limited resources for individuals w high intention to change, reducing waiting times for therapy, important area of applied psych, inc credibility
Strength: RTS US OFFICE OF NATIONAL DRUG CONTROL POLICY
Launched campaign to lower marijuana use in teenagers, focused on creating different attitude towards marijuana, explained that using the drug would make you less independent and less able to achieve goals, effective campaign as reduced marijuana use and positive attitudes in at risk population, attitudes have a important influence, inc validity of TBP
Weakness: assumes addiction in result of rational decisions
In research ppts are asked about intentions and attitudes to addictive behaviour, may be thinking more rationally at this point but when faced with addiction and decision to continue it, emotion stress and cognitive biases which may cause them to make irrational choices which TPB doesn’t account for , rational choices may not be reflected in actual behaviour
