Found that novelty seeking was the trait most associated with increased involvement with alcohol, cannabis and cocaine, research demonstrated positive correlation between novelty seeking and relapse rates for several drugs of abuse amongst addicts , supports how personality traits can and a person more likely to engage in addictive behaviours and increase relapse risk, increasing validity of the theory
Weakness: based on correlational research
Means cause and effect cannot be established, someone develops an addiction which causes them to take more risks, be more reward dependant or engage in novelty seeking, research is done retrospectively so doesn’t show which came first, research lacks internal validity, does not allow us to conclude that personality increases risk of addiction
