Theory of Planned Behaviour Flashcards
what does the theory of planned behaviour suggest about addicition
the theory of planned behaviour suggests that we can change behaviour by reverse engineering the model
how does the theory of planned behaviour aim to reduce engagement with addiction
reducing the factors that cause our intention to begin a behaviour we can therefore, decrease chance of engaging w/behaviour
what is the model of planned behaviour for addiction,
behavioural attitude
subjective norms
perceived behavioural control

what is behavioural attitude, in terms of theory of planned behaviour
this refers to the persons views towards the behaviour and beliefs of its outcome
what is subjective norms, in terms of theory of planned behaviour
this refers to the persons awareness of society and their perceptions of behaviour
what is perceived behavioural control, in terms of theory of planned behaviour
this refers to how in control a person believes they’re of their behaviour
what is intention, in terms of theory of planned behaviour
this refers to a persons intention to perform the behaviour
what is a strength of theory of planned behaviour
P: the theory of planned behaviour (TBP) is its a useful explanation for addiction as it accounts for cultural differences in behaviour change
E: e.g subjective norms vary across cultures
E: TBP remains cross culturally valid, unlike other theories that may not fully consider differing societal attitudes toward addiction
L: this makes it a more adaptable and widely applicable model
what is a limitation of theory of planned behaviour
P: there is research against the TPB
E: research by Hornik et al 2008, evaluated a billion dollar anti drug campaign aimed at discouraging drug use among youth
E: it was found that it actually increased weed usage, this challenges TPB as it suggests behavioural attitudes might not be the primary influence. maybe environmental triggers may play a more significant role
L: therefore, this evidence questions the validity of TPB in explaining addiction as it may overlook key influences that drive addictive behaviours
