Q

define addiction

A

It is the compulsion to use a substance or engage in behaviour DESPITE its harmful consequences.
It is characterised by an inability to stop that behaviour resulting in a failure to function adequately in life.
This includes a building of tolerance to the drug and experiencing withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop

Q

what are the three reasons for why a person may become tolerant to their addiction

A
  1. repeated use leads to desensitisation at the synapse meaning more is needed
  2. Enzymes responsible for the metabolising the drugs become more effective over time
  3. Learned tolerance means the person has learned to function normally meaning they feel less of the effects
