What does the theory of planned behavior suggest?
The most effective way to persuade is to target people’s behavioral intentions
What is the foot in the door tecnique?
Getting someone to commit to something small can get them to commit to something bigger
What are the three parts to behavioral intentions?
attitude towards behavior, subjective norms, percieved behavioral control
What is attitude towards behavior?
Behavioral beliefs: is behavior favorable or unfavorable?
Outcome expectations: will behavior lead to the desired outcome?
What is subjective norms?
Norm-what do important people want you to do
Motivation to comply-are you motivated to comply with their wishes?
What is perceived behavioral control?
Control belief strength- will I have what is required to do this behavior?
Power of control- if I have what is required, will it actually help me?
What type of theory is this?
empirical/positivistic
What is the goal of the theory?
to predict
What are the positive criteria?
scope, logical consistency, utility, testability, heurism
What is the theory negatively criticized on?
Parsimony- is the theory too simple; human behavior is more complex
