Functionalists often compare society to a biological organism like the human body, so just as organs perform functions vital to the well being of the body as a whole, the family meets some of society’s essential needs, such as the need to socialise children.

stabilisation of adult personalities-the emotional relationships between parents give support and security to cope in wider society and acts as a sanctuary from everyday life
