Theories of Technology Integration Flashcards
What is Media Ecology?
The study of media as environments
How does Media Ecology differ from other approaches to study media?
1) Definition of media is broader (any type of technology, communication, information, perception, or expression)
2) Finding the difference between mediums
3) Looks at varying effects that different media have
4) Argues that media function as human environments
What is technology?
An extension of the human body
Can technology be regarded as a medium?
Yes, as long as it mediates between ourselves and our environment
Is language a medium?
Yes, because it is our primary method of communicating to one another
What is an Invisible Environment in regards to Media?
Once a medium becomes a routine part of everyday life it fades into the background, becoming environmental
What is Medium Theory?
Social and behavioural science approaches within the field of media ecology
What are McLuhan’s Laws of Media?
Enhancement: What does the technology uniquely enhance to a human function
Reversal: What will the technology turn into if pushed too far
Retrieval: What does the technology retrieve from an older (ancient) technology
Obsolescence: What piece of technology does this new technology replace
What is Heidegger’s Philosophy of Technology?
We are beings in the world, meaning we are independent subjects that are linked to the world
What is Present at Hand?
The object appears simply as an object
What is Ready to Hand
The object becomes a tool
What is the Law of Instrument?
When we develop an over reliance on a tool our cognitive bias kicks in and we are no longer able to critically evaluate the tool
What is Ihde Postphenomenology?
Technology mediates our world based on the model of User > Technology > World
What is Embodiment?
Technologic extender of you (e.g. calculator)
What is Hermeneutic?
Something that provides you information about the world without directly interacting with technology (e.g. globe, thermometer, clock)
