what is the agentic state?
- a state of agency where individuals follow the orders of others
- they believe they’re not responsible for the consequences of their actions
what is the autonomous state?
a state of agency where individuals act on their own behalf and take responsibility for the consequences of their actions
what is the agentic shift?
the shift between the autonomous and agentic state, occurring when we perceive someone to be a legitimate source of authority and allow them to control our behaviour
what is the agency theory?
a theory suggesting humans have two mental states
what is moral strain?
when we’re told to act on something we see as immoral in order to function as an agent of authority, even if we disgaree with those actiions
what are defence mechanisms?
ways to avoid distress of acting upon something we find unacceptable
what are the two defence mechanisms?
- denial - pushing back the memory to prevent thinking about it
- avoidance - ignoring the distress we cause someone
