Theories of innovation Flashcards
What are paradigm shifts?
developmental shifts such as technology
what is an example of a paradigm shift?
Antibiotics 1930
microchip 1970
When does creative destruction occur?
when a new paradigm emerges
what is creative destruction?
when new industries arise and old ones decline
What are the 4 stages of the long wave cycle?
recovery, prosperity, recession and depression
What is the recovery stage?
new products arise
What is the prosperity stage?
innovations spread
what is the recession stage?
risky investments occur, collapses
what is the depression stage?
new industries mature and replace
What are the four theories of innovation?
Technology s curve, punctured equilibrium, dominant design and absorptive capacity
What is the technology s curve?
- begins with a learning curve
- technology approaches a natural limit
- new technology takes over
e. g LD tv’s
What is dominant design?
A single basic architecture that becomes the accepted market standard
- may create a standard
e. g qwerty keyboard
What is punctured equilibruim?
When technology evolves through series of fits and starts rather than continuously
technological breakthroughs
What is an example of a punctured equilibrium?
areo engines…
piston, turb jet and turbo fan
What is absorptive capacity?
The ability to apply new ideas depending on:
- exposure to knowledge
- presence of prior knowledge
- diversity of experience
