theories of gambling Flashcards
cognitive theories
irrational thinking is thought to cause and maintain gambling- griffiths 1994 = cognitive distortions on gambling.
behavioural theories
behavioural theories view problem gambling as a learned beahviour aquried thorough reinforcement and operating under operant and classical conditioning paradigms (Rickwood et al., 2010)
coperant conditioning is established through fixed and variable ratio schedules of reinforcement= variable ration shedule
positive and negative reinforcement is also involved in gambling etiology (Petry 2005)
early wins are important in gambling becoming problematic, almost half of gamblers report a significant monetary gain in the initial phase of their disorder (SSaffer et al., 2012)
Polezzi et al. 2012- classical conditioning takes place when indiivuals continue to gamble as a result of becoming conditioned to states such as the excitement and arousal associated with gambling, leading them to feel bored, unstimulated, and restless when they are unbale to gamble.
