Q

adverts

A

Systevertson et al., 2022-
study published in the Journal of Gambling Studies investigated the associations between exposure to various types of gambling advertising, the perceived impact of these advertisements, and problem gambling severity. The findings indicated that higher exposure to certain advertising types, particularly those perceived as impactful, was associated with increased problem gambling severity. This suggests that specific advertising strategies may contribute to the development or exacerbation of gambling problems

It should also be noted that the current study was cross-sectional and relied upon self-report measures. The cross-sectional nature of the present study prevents us from concluding regarding directionality and causality.

The results indicated that those with higher problem gambling severity perceived a greater impact from gambling advertisements, suggesting that such advertising may play a role in maintaining or intensifying gambling behaviors among vulnerable populations.- Gainsbury et al., 2016

Q

social media

A

Gainsbury et al., 2016-
Research published in PubMed explored how gambling marketing on social media platforms affects gamblers, especially those at moderate risk or experiencing gambling problems. The study found that these individuals were more likely to engage with gambling operators on social media and reported that such promotions led to increased gambling activity and exacerbated gambling-related issues. This underscores the potential risks associated with targeted gambling advertisements on social media platforms

Q

impact of games

A

Choliz et al., 2015- It is possible that the growth and promotion of online gambling will result in substantially increased use of these types of games in countries where they are legal. This may be especially true for young people due to their interest in such games. In this context, it is important to note that online gambling is more addictive than any other type of game due its structural characteristics, such as immediacy, accessibility, ease of betting, and so on. This study examined the effect of online gambling in Spain 2 years after its legalization. The sample included 1277 pathological gamblers in recovery at 26 gambling addiction treatment centers. Our results showed a significant increase in young pathological gamblers since the legalization of this activity.

Q

cognitive distortions

A

Cognitive distortions are irrational thought patterns that contribute to the maintenance of gambling addiction by reinforcing false beliefs and maladaptive behaviors. Several key distortions play a role in gambling addiction:

The Gambler’s Fallacy – This is the belief that past events influence future outcomes in games of chance. For example, a gambler may believe that after a series of losses, a win is “due,” leading them to continue gambling.

Illusion of Control – Many gamblers believe they can influence random outcomes through skill or specific strategies, such as choosing “lucky” numbers or performing rituals before betting. This false sense of control encourages continued gambling.

Near-Miss Effect – Gamblers often perceive near-misses (e.g., getting two out of three matching symbols on a slot machine) as signs that a win is imminent, which increases motivation to keep playing.

Overestimation of Wins and Underestimation of Losses – Gamblers tend to remember their wins more vividly than their losses, leading them to believe they are more successful than they actually are. This distortion fuels continued gambling.

Chasing Losses – Some gamblers believe they can recover their losses by continuing to bet, leading to a cycle of increasing wagers and financial harm.
