Education helps to maintain social stability by developing value consensus, social harmony social cohesion

the new right problems with state education
- one size fits all imposes uniformity and doesnt acknowledge social needs

- schools that waste money and get low results

purpose of the marketisation of education
create competition between schools so that schools raise their standards and compete for consumers
focus of vocational education and views on it
v. education was introduced to combat high unemployment levels and improve skills
functionalists and the new right believe this boosts the economy
marxists view this second rate education as making people wage slaves and whilst m/c enjoy academia
