Theories of Aging Flashcards
This theory talks about the progressive lost of function.
It is a multifactorial process involving genetics, oxidative stress, diet, and environment
BIOLOGIC AGING THEORIES
It propose that aging is gene-programmed. Aging is a result of changes from complex predetermined process
NONSTOCHASTIC THEORIES
What are examples of stochastic theories?
- Cross-linking theory
- Free radicals and lipofuscin theory
- Wear and tear theory
- Evolutionary theory
- Biogerontology theory
2 categories of Biologic Aging Theory
- Stochastic theory
- Nonstochastic theory
This theory proposes that repeated exposure to ionizing radiation causes aging
RADIATION THEORY
It proposes that aging is due to chance and it views that biological aging results from the assault of external and internal environment
STOCHASTIC THEORIES
This theory attributes aging to the repeated use & injury of the body over time
WEAR AND TEAR THEORIES
These theories of aging are related to genetics and hypothesize that the differences in aging process is due to genetics ( interplay bet. mutation & natural selection)
EVOLUTIONARY THEORY
3 subcategories of Evolutionary theory
- Mutation Accumulation Theory
- Antagonistic Pleiotropy Theory
- Disposable Soma Theory
In this theory, oxidative stress (free radical combines w/ another molecule resulting to oxidative process)can disrupt cell membranes and alter DNA and protein synthesis
FREE RADICALS AND LIPOFUSCIN THEORY
This suggests that more mutations occur with aging can ultimately lead to functional failure
ANTAGONISTIC PLEIOTROPY THEORY
This proposes that aging is related to the use of body’s energy rather than genetics.
DISPOSABLE SOMA THEORY
This theory avers that over time and as a result of exposure to chemicals and radiation in the environment, cross-links from between lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, and nucleic acids.
CROSS-LINKING THEORY
This theory believes that pathogens/ infectious microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses) are responsible for certain physiologic changes during aging process
BIOGERONTOLOGICAL THEORY
This theory suggests that aging occurs due to declining force of natural selection with age.
Meaning, genetic mutations that appear late in life will accumulate bcs older individuals they affect already passed this mutations to their offspring
MUTATION ACCUMULATION THEORY
