Ideology
set of ideas and values shared by a social group
Marxist ideology
-Manheim- generally associated with dominant ideology with the deliberate obscuring of facts in order to conceal inequalities
-Althusser- ideological state apparatus, social institutions justify the power of dominant class
-Gramsci- hegemony, process whereby the ruling class maintains its power, by persuading other social classes to adopt ruling class ideology
Feminist ideology
Patriarchal ideology- male dominated society
-inequalities creates a dominant group
Neo-Marxist ideology
tend to believe the original Marxist view is too deterministic
-Gramsci- dual consciousness
Postmodern Ideology
Do not usually use the term ideology
-Lyotard- metanarratives have a similar meaning, in modernity, metanarratives ended in disaster- therefore declining
Ideology and religion
religion offers a vision of and a means of understanding and interpreting the world. However, religion and its beliefs aren’t necessarily tied to the interests of a particular social group
-Giddens- religion involves shared beliefs and rituals that provide a sense of ultimate meaning and purpose by creating an idea of reality that is sacred
