Theories And Identity Flashcards
Who believed humans were naturally selfish?
Durkheim - functionalist
How does Functionalism think of identity?
It is linked to our roles in society and gender roles are natural
Who criticises Functionalism and why?
Postmodernists feel there is no longer one single culture. Marxists do not feel society is meritocratic. Action theory says we can reject socialisation. Feminists say gender roles are unnatural and harmful
What do feminists think of gender identity?
Traditions give men higher status and power (however postmodernist feminists suggest not all females are oppressed) and socialisation teaches patriarchy as the norm.
What to feminists think is the most important influence on our identity?
Gender (others argue ethnicity and social class are more important)
Which Action Theorist thinks we use props to shape our identity?
Goffman
What does labelling theory state?
Stereotypes can change our view of ourselves, leading to a self fulfilling prophecy (however evaluate that some many have more freedom to reject socialisation than others)
