tannenbaum-schmidt continuum
boss centred - subordinated based management
tells - manager makes decision and tells employees (no input). eg. for new, unskilled, untrustworthy workers and a smaller business. otherwise could lead to absenteeism and issues with staff turnover
sells - manager presents idea to employees and invites questions.
suggests/consults/joins - manager presents problems and asks for suggestions. more opportunity for employee engagement = fuller use of talents. tentative ideas can be tweaked meaning employees feel more influential/useful
delegates - manager defines limits and lets employees make decisions eg. requiring expertise like marketing experts in media labs. requires a huge amount of trust as managers are still responsible for the decision. high motivation.
