Theoretical Perspectives Flashcards
Information processing theory (1960-1980) Dick Schmidt
the view that behavior as mental operation on sensations so that a response can be made.
“ a computer conducts operations on input that results in output”
Ecological perspective (1980)
a viewpoint that stresses interrelationships between the individual, the environment, and the task. 1980’s
Dynamic systems approach Scott Kelso
an ecological viewpoint of an individual’s systems as self-regulating and the results of an interaction of variables and processes that combine spontaneously.
“musical chairs”
Rate Limiter
Biological, psychological, and environmental constraints that limit how quickly someone can learn a motor skill.
Rate Controller
In the later portions of the life span, aging/changing more quickly than others.
Perception-Action approach (Gibson)
An ecological viewpoint holding that perception and action systems are mutually and reciprocally related and they are evolved together.
Perception-Action example
Basketball player adjusting a shot based on the distance of the hoop and it’s position relative to the body.
affordance
the function an environmental object provides to an individual.
Body scaling
the process of changing the dimensions of the environment in relation to structural constraints of a performer.
Function of Action
Body stability, Body transport, and Manipulation.
Environmental Context
Stationary/motion, Regulatory conditions.
Self-Organization
Behavior emerges in response to particular set of constraints.
