What is it indicated for?
Chronic asthma
Severe acute asthma
Respiratory airway obstruction
What is important information regarding its pharmacokinetics?
Dose adjustments may be needed if smoking started or stopped during treatment
Theophylline is metabolised in the liver
Plasma concentration increased in HF, hepatic impairment, and viral infections.
Plasma concentration is decreased in smokers and alcohol consumption.
Differences in the half life are important as it has a narrow therapeutic index.
What are signs of overdose
Vomiting
Agitation
Restlessness
Dilated pupils
Sinus tachycardia
Hyperglycaemia
More serious effects are haematemesis, convulsions, and supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. Severe hypokalaemia may develop rapidly.
