COUGH;
What are demulcents and expectorants?
Demulcents are cough preparations that contain soothing substances such as syrup or glycerol. Unlikely they actually work but simple linctus and paediatric simple linctus are harmless
Expectorants such as guaifenesin promote the expulsion of bronchial secretions.These should not be used in children under 6.

pseudoephedrine
What are advantages of oral decongestants over topical?
they do not cause rebound congestion
Who should not be given decongestants?
caution in;
diabetes
hypertension
hyperthyroidism
AVOIDED in people taking MAOIs

What cough remedies should NOT be given to children younger than 6?
Antihistamines containing cough medicines -chlorphenamine
cough suppressants; dextromethorphan
Expectorants;

Decongestants;
pseudoephedrine
phenylephrine
What cough remedies can not be given to children younger than 12?
codeine
What advice would you give for cough remedies for children?
Cough cold remedies can be given but limited to 5 days
Should not be given more than 1 cough or cold preparation at a time.
What are cough suppressants?
codeine, dextromethophan
used in patients whose sleep is disturbed but may lead to sputum retention which can worsen COPD
What is not recommended for children infants under the age of 3months?
Use of strong aromatic decongestants (applied as rubs or to pillow) no advised
Infant with nasal obstruction with mucus can be give NaCl nasal drops. Administration before feeds may ease feeding difficulties caused by nasal congestion.
