Theology J (Last Things) Flashcards
What happens to believers at death? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
“The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness, and do immediately pass into glory and their bodies, being still united to Christ, do rest in their graves, till the resurrection.” WSC #37
“Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. . . Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord… We are confident, I say. and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. “-2 Corinthians 5:1,6,8
“Jesus answered him. I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise. .’-Luke 23:43
What happens to unbelievers at death? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
They are cast into hell.
“…And the souls of the wicked are cast into hell, where they remain in torments and utter darkness, reserved to the judgment of the great day …“-WCF 32.1
“And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.” Jude 6-7
“… through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison. “-1 Peter 3:19
Who will be raised to life at the last day?
The unjust and just alike.
“The bodies of the unjust shall, by the power of Christ, be raised to dishonor: the bodies of the just, by His Spirit, unto honor; and be made conformable to His own glorious body.” -WCF 32.3
“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out–those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. “
-John. 5:28-29
Who will be judged at the last day? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
The apostate angels and all persons who have walked the earth.
“God has appointed a day, wherein He will judge the world, in righteousness, by Jesus Christ, to whom all power , and judgment is given of the Father. In which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged, but likewise all persons that have lived upon the earth shall appear before the tribunal of Christ, to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds; and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil. “
-WCF 33.1
“And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. “ Jude 6-7
“…See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him. “-Jude 14-15
By whom will they be judged? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
By Jesus Christ.
“God has appointed a day, wherein He will judge the world, in righteousness, by Jesus Christ, to whom all power, and judgment is given of the Father. In which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged, but likewise, all persons that have lived upon the earth shall appear before the tribunal of Christ, to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds; and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil. “
-WCF 33.1
“For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.” -Acts 17:31
Will any receive a second chance? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
No, man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.
“Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” -Hebrews 9:27
“I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be you will indeed die in your sins.”
-John 8:24
What practical use is the doctrine of the final judgement? Include Scripture proofs.
Consoles the godly facing adversity; shakes off carnal security; creates a watchfulness.
“As Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that there shall be a day of judgment, both to deter all men from sin; and for the greater consolation of the godly in their adversiO’, so will He have that day unknown to men, that they may shake off all carnal security, and be always watchful, because they know not at what hour the Lord will come; and may be ever prepared to say, Come Lord Jesus, come quickly. Amen. “
-WCF 33.3
Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.
(2 Corinthians 5:8-11 ESV)
When will Christ return? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
No one knows .
“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father …Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into”
-Matthew 24:36, 42-43
What will heaven be like? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
Christ ascended to heaven, which can only mean the he went from one place to another. It is described as the house of our Father, with many mansions (John 14:1), and this description would hardly fit a condition. Moreover believers are said to be within and unbelievers without. Scripture gives us reason to believe that the righteous will not only inherit heaven but an entire new creation.
Is there a hell? Defend your answer with Scripture proofs.
Yes.
“If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed, or crippled than to have two hands or two feel and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. “-Matthew 18: 8-9
“As with weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will call out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 13:40-42
What is “annihilationism”? Briefly defend your view from Scripture.
The teaching that the reprobate are destroyed completely ( annihilated) after the judgment, rather than facing eternal punishment.
- “the vocabulary of destruction” This can only at times appear to support annilationism. It - is not an option when the whole biblical picture is taken into account.
- Hell-fire imagery: Hell-fire speaks of the pain of the wicked, not of their consumption.
- God’s justice: We must learn of divine justice from the Bible itself. It will not do to protest God’s revealed judgments on the basis of what seems fair to us.
- ‘“Universalist passages”: Universalists and annilationists have to argue that the last three chapters of the Bible are not a picture of the final state since these chapters reject both views.
- Conditional immortality: Peterson believes in the immortality of human beings because the Bible clearly teaches everlasting damnation for the wicked and everlasting life for the righteous. …
