Theodicys Flashcards
What is Saint Augustina theology in and monks argument that wrestles with the problem of evil
Augustín argues that the all-powerful God made the world completely free of evil, impossible to create evil as it is not a substance.
Augustinas
Justification of moral evil
Humankind starting with Adam and Eve chose to introduce moral evil with their free will. There is still more evil today as we are all seminally present in Adam. Humans deserve it to pay for the sins of Adam and Eve
Augustine’s justification of natural evil
Part of gods perfect order for the world. Only seen is evil because of our inability as humans to see the whole picture as God does
Strengths of Augustines argument
Biblically based, evil is not a substance, Aquinas agreed (NE is just human perspective)
Free will: without it there would be no point
Offers solution
Weaknesses of Augustine’s theodicy
God is guilty: God should have foreseen Adam committing original sin, not perfect world
Logical error: Evil cannot create itself from nothing
Scientific: we came from 7 different tribes
What is irenaeus’ theodicy of why there is moral evil
God did not create humans perfect to start with because humanity must decide for themselves to become God like, god does not step in as this would compromise human freedom
Irenaeus’ theodicy of natural evil with hick
The natural world could not be paradise as there would be no chance of ever causing harm. Humans then would not be free to choose to be like God
Strengths of Irenaeus’ theodicy
Biblically based: “make man in my image”
Solution
Goal for life
Weaknesses of irenaeus’ theodicy
Quantity of suffering is unjust
Suffering is not an expression of love,
