What is peace?
Everyone in the world living in harmony where there is no conflict

Work to find peaceful solutions to dispute and end all wars
What is pacifism?
It is when a person has strong beliefs about war and physical violence being wrong. pacifists believe all disputes should be settled in a peaceful manor
What are the types of violence?
Crime, terrorism, war and protests
What are the causes of war?
RELIGION - disagreements
SELF-DEFENCE - to stop an attacker
TRIBALISM - a group fighting or their own independent state
HONOUR - defending honour or dignity of a country, or to save face
GREED/ECONOMICS - acts of aggression
RETALIATION - may start due to revenge
what is the Just War Theory?
A philosophical theory that explains the conditions that there must be for a war to be classed as “necessary”
what are the points needed for a war to be JUST?
A good reason e.g self-defense
All other options must be have been attempted
Must be started by proper authority
Must have a reasonable chance of succession
Any harm caused by fighting the war mustn’t be as bad as the harm its trying to prevent
Why do people fight in HOLY WARS?
They belt they are bing supported by God
- Old Testament, Torah and Quran say “God is on our side”
What are some teachings to support why Catholics should be peaceful?
Jesus teachings
Isaiah referred to the Messiah as the PRINCE OF PEACE
“Love you Enemies”
“If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheeks also”
“All who drew the sword will die because of it”
“Blessed are the peacemakers”

why is violence sometimes allowed in JUDAISM?

Detterent to ensure peace
Utilitarianism perspective
Can be used for self-defense

Huge loss of lives
Weapons are costly; money could be spent elsewhere
Sanctity of life - only God can take away a life

Earth is God’s creation - weapons soul destroy God’s creation
What are Christian views against wmd?
Some use Jesus’ teachings about peace to argue against them
Some believe it keep the peace
What are some Jewish arguments against wmds?
The Talmud says if t harm over a sixth of the population, its not allowed
Can’t be justified what so ever
What are some atheists views on WMDs?
In favour - deter an opponent ( they don’t believe tie action will be judged)
Anti-WMD - only live 1 life
Humanists have opposed the use of WMDs due to the huge number of people who would suffer
What is essential for peacemaking?
JUSTICE - people get what hey deserve
FORGIVENESS - stops feeling hurt by something someone has done
RECONCILIATION - bringing people together that previously were in conflict
Why do Christian’s believe God’s fair and forgiving?
Equal in the eyes of God
“To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly its your God”
Why do Jews work for justice and forgiveness?
Belief in fairness “by three things in the world sustained, law, truth, and peace”
True peace is when everyone is treated fairly and any people in conflict are reconciled
Seeking forgiveness from God is important to mending the relationship
