Theme D: Managing Our Environment Flashcards
What is meant by the greenhouse affect?
A natural process where heat from the sun is trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gasses
How does the greenhouse effect work?
Suns rays enter the atmosphere
Some solar radiation is reflected back into space
Some of it is trapped in atmosphere due to greenhouse gasses
How do LEDCs contribute to global warming?
They want to develop their country. This means they burn for fuel and they can only develop if they keep burning fossil fuels
Explain the impact of global warming in terms of ice caps and glaciers.
Ice caps and glaciers will melt. This will increase the sea level and therefore make coastal regions in the world uninhabitable
Explain the impact of global warming on the weather
It will affect weather patterns and therefore there may be more extreme weather
List 3 OPPORTUNITIES as a result of global warming
Less winter deaths
Faster Sitka Spruce Tree growth in Scotland (Used for paper)
More UK Tourism
List 3 THREATS as a result of global warming
Coastal erosion
Water shortages
More pests in forests
In what region, in the summer, has there been an increase in rainfall due to global warming?
Britain
Since 1900, how much have global sea levels risen by? (CM)
17cm
In the next 100 years, if global temps rise by 2-3C, what percentage of species may go extinct?
20 to 30%
How does coral bleaching work?
Ocean becomes more acidic (Ocean acidification)
Happens because of oceans absorbing CO2
Leads to bleaching and eventually death of coral
In Australia, where is an example of an area that may be affected by coral bleaching?
Great Barrier Reef
How will species in the UK adapt to warmer temperatures?
Move northwards or higher up mountains
What percentage will rice production fall by in South Africa due to global warming?
10%
What percentage will maize production increase by in Europe due to global warming?
25%
Why may some people die due to global warming?
Events such as droughts and floods
As glaciers in the Himalayas melt, there will be a shortage of drinking water. What river provides water for drinking and agriculture to 500 million people?
Ganges River
In the UK, by 2080, what could the cost flood protection be?
12 billion
What country is investing in green tech to create jobs for people?
Denmark
As a result of climate change, what is Brazil’s GDP meant to drop by in 2100?
83%
What is meant by the term “Carbon Footprint”?
A measurement of the amount of greenhouse gasses produced by a person or organisation in a given time
List 2 ways a person could reduce their carbon footprint
Walk or cycle
Buy less bottled water
How does a person’s carbon footprint contribute to climate change?
Their actions may produce greenhouse gasses
lIn terms of waste production , what does “reduce” mean?
Produce less waste
In order from best to worst, list the 4 stages of the waste hierarchy.
Reduce
Reuse
Recycle
Dispose
