Theme D Flashcards

1
Q

Define Greenhouse Effect and how it affects climate change

A

Greenhouse effect is a natural process, where heat from the Sun is trapped in our atmosphere by gases such as CO2 and Methane.

This keeps the earth Warm

8
Q

Benefits of Wind Renewable Energy

A

Green jobs are created by setting up renewable sources

Reduced carbon emissions: will reduced greenhouse effect as there is less need to burn fossil fuels

Less dependance on imports and a more secure supply: U will no longer rely on trading with Arab states for oil and can produce their own local energy

9
Q

Negatives of Wind Renewable Energy

A

High Set up Costs: Wind farms are expensive to set up
Walney in Cumbria cost over 1 billion
it will take 20 years for the investment to break even

Q

Describe the 2015 Climate Change Agreement

A

An agreement between 195 countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to prevent global temperatures increasing by more than 1.5 degrees

Each country has a targebt for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, which will become more ambitious every year

11
Q

Positives of 2015 Climate Change Agreement

A

Most Governments have agreed to review their progress every5 years, and to set more ambitious targets and sharing these will other countries for evaluation

100 Billion Dollars has been pledged to support LEDCs to reduce carbon emissions. This makes it more equitable(fair)

12
Q

Negatives of 2015 Climate Change Agreement

A

The Agreement is non binding-this means that there are no consequence for countries that fail to reach targets

Countries can leave agreement anytime. USA joined the agreement when Biden became president and USA left the agreement when Trump took charge again

It will cost money for countries to reduce their emmisions

14
Q

Negative Economic Impact of tourism

A

Most of the money earned in tourism does not stay in the place where it is earned. 17% of Kenya tourist earning leaks away from the Kenyan Economy

Many Jobs are seasonal

Q

Positive Environmental Impact of Tourism

A

Money can be spend on improving the community(roads, airports)

tourist attractions such as scenery and historic buildings are likely to be conserved because of tourism

16
Q

Negative Environment Impact of Tourism

A

Tourism makes high demands on water. Tourists use up water which is needed for agriculture . Zanzibar locals use 60 liters a day where as tourists use 685 liters

Important ecosystems such as mangrove forests are destroyed to create beach sites

17
Q

Positive Cultural Impact of Tourism

A

Tourism can open up areas to other cultures . helping people to understand each other

can generate pride in history, culture , environment of locals

18
Q

Negative Cultural Impact of Tourism

A

Restaurants , bars and other entertainment can bring disturbing public behavior

tourists may forget to follow local culture which may be offensive to locals, Example: eating during Ramadan in Dubai

19
Q

Describe a responsible tourist

A

A tourist who respects the environment and people in the place they visit

20
Q

explain how to be a responsible tourist

A

Travel locally to cut down CO2 emissions from planes

Respect local culture to not offend locals

Leave no trace to protect ecosystem

Purchase from local shops to ensure locals benefit from tourism

21
Q

Describe and explain ecotourism

A

Ecotourism is a sustainable form of tourism which involves protect the environment and local way of life at the destination

22
Q

Asses how ecotourism can protect the environment(Nam Ha)

A

100 locals in 57 villages are employed as guides offering up lodges and forest camps to tourists. Within this role they are able to monitor and protect the environment against poachers

Over 8000 dollars has been donated to specific conversation projects

Locals can now see the benefit in environment- instead of cutting down an orchid for 20 cents they can bring a tour group to see them for 5 dollars

23
Q

Positive Effects of Climate Change on People

A

Green Jobs will be created in industries such as renewable energy

For Example in Denmark

24
Q

Negative Effects of Climates Change on People

A

Climate Change has lead to forest fires in places such as California, which lead to loss of properties and infrastructure

25
Positive Effects of Climate Change Economy
Climate change leads to sea ice melts which allow for easier movement for cargo ships between the new sea routes created between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean
26
Negative Effects of Climate Change Economy
India suffered an income loss of 158 billion USD, due to loss of GDB in agriculture and manufacture due to extreme heat in 2021
27
Positive Effects of Climate Change Environment
trees can grow further north in Siberia as the climate warms create new forest habitats
28
Negative Effects of Climate Change Environment
By 2045 there will no Arctic Sea ice in the summer-destroying the habitat of animals like the polar bear
29
