24
Q

The argument from miracles

A

BELIEVERS - non scientific explanation, amazing events are caused by God
ATHEISTS - don’t prove God, just a happy coincidence, miracles that heal are the placebo effect (illness is in the mind)

25
Q

Evil and suffering

A

Natural evil and moral evil
ATHEIST - why is there suffering if there is an omnipotent God, more likely he doesn’t exist
CHRISTIANS - moral evil is a result of using God-given free will and making a mess. Natural evils are caused by man
FUNDAMENTALIST - Adam and Eve (the fall), no longer ‘good’ and full of natural evil

26
Q

Anthony Flew and the invisible Gardner

A

Show religious people who to interpret science
> two jungle explores came across a clearing. One thinks that it is an accident and the other believes that there is a gardener. No gardener is found - the believer argues that maybe the gardener is invisible. After tests no gardener is found and the believer continues to believe.
Believers might agree that God caused the Big Bang but the rest of creation happened as a result of natural selection and not all prayers are answered - so God might as well be imaginary or not exist

27
Q

Special revelation

A

A vision that is seen by a particular person (Bernadette in Lourdes) ~ visions and miracles
