1990 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act- abortion allowed up to 24th week if two doctors agree that one of conditions applies
Abortion Conditions (4)
- Woman’s life is in danger
- Risk to woman’s physical/ mental health
- Significant risk to baby having severe mental/ physical disabilities
- Additional child may affect mental/ physical health of existing children
What is ‘Euthanasia’ ?
-Painless killing of a patient suffering incurable and painful disease or an irreversible coma
Types of euthanasia (3)
- Voluntary: person asks doctor to end own life, their own choice
- Non-voluntary: person is too ill to request it but doctor will end their life, in their best interests
- Involuntary: person can provide consent but doesn’t and their life is ended anyway
Forms of Euthanasia
- Active: active steps taken to end someone’s life
- Passive: when doctors stop providing treatment or do something to quicken natural process of dying
