What is an MP
Member of parliament
What sort of democracy do we have in the UK
Direct democracy
Every one votes and has a say
How are laws made
Idea for a new law is proposed
House of Commons or lords discuss the bill
One parliament discusses and then pass to the other house to agree the same bill
Then taken to the queen to agree the law and then it will be active
What is the different between a bill and an act
A bill is the stage before an act
If a bill is passed it then becomes an act. An act of parliament is a law
Why are then so many stages before a law is made
To make sure that the law is correct for the country and to make sure that there are no risks for the law and to make sure that everyone agrees
What are the advantages of first past the post
Fairly quick to count the votes
What is the disadvantages of first past the post
Representatives can get elected with small amounts of public support, as the size of the winning margin is irrelevant: what matters is only that they get more votes than other candidates.
Define proportional representation
Proportional representation is a system used to elect a country’s government. This means the results of an election decide directly how many seats each party has got. Each elected representative will be a member of one or another party. If one party has an overall majority, then it forms the government.
What is devolution
Devolution is about the transfer of power by a central government to local or regional administrations.
Why do Scottish people want independence
They want E.U membership
They do not agree with some on the nuclear weapon rules England has
They want independence and there own government
