A
The controlling idea in a story; the central insight the story gives us about human life.

Why should you not expect the theme to be stated blatantly by the writer?
A
Writers do not often consciously focus on creating a theme. The theme/central focus instead comes from how the writer views people and events.

Is theme the same as moral?
A
No.

How is a theme different from a moral?
A
A moral is what lesson story teaches, while a theme is what the story reveals about the human experience. Ex: Love, grief, etc.
