What is the pathophysiology/potential causes of BMS?
A
Salivary Gland Dysfunction - subjective xerostomia and relief in drinking water but no evidence of saliva composition change
Peripheral and CNS abnormalities - dysgeusia, elevated taste thresholds (chorda tympani dysfunction), lower density epithelial nerve fibres ant 2/3 tongue, reduced dopamine levels
Psychosocial issue - anxiety, depression and stress

What are the clinical characteristics of BMS?
A
- Post menopausal women
- Tongue most common site
- Burning that appears suddenly with no known precipitating incident and is constant
- Emotional stress can worsen burning
- Altered taste sensation (metallic or bitter)
- Preceding diagnosis of anxiety or depression

What are the differential diagnosis for systemic causes that may present with burning mouth?

- Sjogrens
- Anaemia
- Allergy
- Vit deficiency
- Diabetes
- Hypothyroidism
- Medication related
- Reflux
- Fibromyalgia
