Theme 2: Soil #3 Flashcards
1
Q
Phosphorus (P)
A
- Promotes root and shoot development
- Needed for seed germination
- It also, speeds up crop maturity and ripening of fruits
2
Q
Deficiency of phosphorus on plants
A
- Poor root development
- Stunted growth
- Purple leaves
- Too much phosphorus causes crops to ripen too early which will reduce the quality
3
Q
Organic source
A
- Manure
- Compost
4
Q
Inorganic source
A
- Superphosphate fertilizer
- NPK fertilizer
5
Q
Potassium (K)
A
- Strengthens plants stalks
- Promotes quality grain seeds, flowers, fruits
- Improves plant resistance to diseases and drought
6
Q
Deficiency of potassium
A
- Brown patches on leaf edges
- Poor growth and weak stems.
7
Q
Organic source
A
- Compost
- Manure
8
Q
Inorganic source
A
- NPK fertilizer
- Potassium permanganate
- Muriate of potash
9
Q
Calcium (Ca)
A
- To strengthen cell walls
- Neutralise toxins in plants
10
Q
Deficiency in calcium
A
- Causes neurosis of some plant tissue (death of tissue, curling of the leaves)
11
Q
Magnesium (Mg)
A
- For the formation of chlorophyll in plants
- Important for photosynthesis
12
Q
Deficiency of magnesium
A
- Causes chlorosis
- Stunted growth
- Overuse of magnesium shows some deficiency of calcium
13
Q
Sulphur (S)
A
- Facilitate physiological process e.g. diffusion, osmosis photosynthesis and respiration
- For the formation of chlorophyll
14
Q
Deficiency of sulfur
A
- Leaves turn light grand and later yellow
