Reasons for counter-urbanisation?
Housing, prices and style may be more appealing somewhere rural
Transport, with more people owning cars and better rail-links and roads it makes work more accessible from elsewhere.
Social factors, better schools, low population, smaller crime rates
Environmental factors, less air and noise pollution
Impacts of counter-urbanisation on rural areas:
House prices increase
A decrease in traditional services
Increase in children in local schools
Traffic increase on rural roads
Most residents wont work in the village and will lead to loss of shops/markets
What is the difference between primary jobs and tertiary jobs?
Job that involves getting raw material, fishing mining and farming. in comparison to a job that provides a service, nurse, teaching, retail
What is a commuter belt?
Area around a town or city where people travel to work in the urban area
Describe the strategies used to create a sustainable rural community:
Reliable and frequent transport,
Availability of jobs,
Internet connections,
Education,
Healthcare,
Village Services,
What are some factors affecting population change?
Healthcare- longer life expectancy
Marriage- people are starting marriages much later
Ageing population- with more and more people going past their child bearing age it reduces the amount of babies born
cost of raising a family- cost of living has increased
maternity pay- longer period may encourage more people
contraception- widely available
migration- both in and out of UK
Vaccination programmes- lowers death rates
What are some challenges faced when building on greenfield sites?
Environmental sustainability- destruction of rural land and risk of urban sprawl
Economic sustainability- Cost of new houses may be too high for local residents, high proportion is likely to leave and commute to work leaving the town empty
Social sustainability- The need of local services will need to be introduced
Give an example of a high street change:
Lancaster, new paving which gives it a new fresh clean look, street furniture which lasts and looks better for longer, New signs which help pedestrians look around, a market day to help add variety of independent retailers.
