Thematic Studies Key Terms Flashcards
Evaporation is
When the water is warmed and evaporated into water vapour where it rises.
Condensation is
When the water vapour becomes liquid and is heavier then air.
Precipitation is
Any form of weather from the clouds. Such as snow, rain, hail, sleet.
Surface flow is
When excess water that didn’t sink into the ground flow across the land to find a lake or river.
Through flow is
When excess water that didn’t sink into the ground flow across the land to find a lake or river.
The water table is
A collection of groundwater beneath the surface
Transpiration is
The process of water moving through a plant and evaporating.
Hydraulic action is
When water smashes against the rock and breaks of bits.
Corrosion is
When acids corrode with the smaller rocks in the water.
Abrasion is
When rocks rub against each other and erode.
Attrition is
When rocks crash into each other.
Traction is
When boulder sized rocks roll along the river bed
Floatation is
When small and light rocks float the way.
Suspension is
When tiny rocks are carried by the water but not on the surface
Solution is
Minerals are dissolved in the water and the water flows with the stuff in it.
Saltation is
When rocks the size of a fist bounce along the river bed.
Deposition is
When the river has too much to carry and drops some of its load.
A gorge is
A small trench where a river is situated at the bottom from waterfalls cutting back.
A meander is
A bend or many in a river. It is created by erosion and overtime becomes and Ox bow lake
An Ox bow lake is
The remains of a meander that is cut off from a water source. Eventually they dry up and become river scars.
A floodplain is
Flat land at the same level as a river. Easy to flood.
Levees are
Built up land either sides of rivers to prevent flooding
An estuary is
Where the river meets the sea.
A delta is
Where lots of sediment lower course builds up to create something as big as a tiny island.
Interlocking Spurs are
Small hills that intercept the river and force it to weave through.
A tributary is
A small or large river that joins into another river.
A confluence is
The precise point that a tributary joins a river.
A headland is
A type of promontory that is usually a sheer drop into water.
A bay is
An eroded part of coast, that creates headlands.
A spit is
A Coastal landform made by deposition from prevailing wind and river estuary.
A Natural Increase is when
The Birth rate is higher than the Death rate.
What is Birth rate?
It is the amount of people born per 1000 people.
What is Death rate?
It is the amount of people that die per 1000 people.
What is a Dependency ratio?
A dependency ratio is the ratio of people being able to work (16-64) and the people that can’t (0-15 + 64-97)
What is a MNCs
A Multi National Company, e.g Apple, Rolls Royce.
What is Soft engineering?
Soft engineering is a low cost, local approach to Coastal landforms.
What is Hard engineering?
Hard engineering is an expensive, top down approach to coastal erosion.
What is a Rip-Rap?
A Rip-Rap is a coastal defence that is Hard engineering. It stops the erosion of the cliffs and hills behind it.
What is a Groyne?
A groyne is a coastal defence that stops the effects of Long-Shore-Drift
What is a Spit?
A Spit is formed from water pushing sediment into a river estuary, which creates a built up area of sand.
What is weather?
Weather is the current events of the atmosphere right now.
What is climate?
Climate is the weather of an area over 30 years.
What is a microclimate?
A microclimate is a climate for a small specific area, e.g a park or garden.
