Tectonic Processes Flashcards
What occurs at a destructive plate boundary?
At a destructive plate boundary a continental plate meets an oceanic plate, and because the oceanic plate is heavier, the oceanic plate gets subducted and the continental goes on top. However as the oceanic plate is getting subducted, some friction occurs and earthquakes, tsunamis and even sometimes volcanoes are created
What occurs at a constructive plate boundary?
At a constructive plate boundary two plates different or the same type, are getting pushed away from each other. This creates an area where there is no land, therefore the magma from beneath the plates rises and fills the space.
What occurs at a conservative plate boundary?
A conservative plate boundary is when two plates of the same or different type slide in the same direction or opposite direction parallel to each other. This usually creates friction and causes and earthquake.
What occurs at a collision plate boundary?
A collision plate boundary is when two plates of the same type, collide together, and are pushed up. For example, if two continental plates were pushed together, they would create fold mountains or volcanoes. If oceanic plates were the same thing would occur but underwater.
Where is the ring of fire?
The ring of fire is a ring(oval) of volcanoes that are between the Eurasian plate and the North American plate.
