thematic anaylsis Flashcards
what kind of data does it deal with?
qualitative
what does it focus on?
generating and identifying common themes that are present throughout data in order to make conclusions
is it inductive or deductive?
both
it is flexible in its use
what is inductive?
themes emerge from the data
what is deductive?
themes are identified first
how many stages are there?
six
what are the six stages?
familiarisation coding searching for themes reviewing themes defining and naming themes writing up
what is familiarisation?
reacher must first immerse themselves in the data to become familiar with the data
reading and re reading noting any important analysis
what is coding
generating bried labels for important features of data
coding ends by collating all the codes together
what is searching for themes?
this is when you search fro areas of data that is relevant and similar to your codes
what is reviewing themes?
involves checking that the themes work in relation to codes
whether themes tell a story about the data
define the nature and relationship between each themes
what is defining and naming themes?
write a detailed analysis of each theme
constructing a concise name
inter rater reliabilty? S
there can be more than one coder
check if there are comparisons etc
what is the main strength of TA?
it is way of reducing large amounts of data into manageable summary and conclusions without losing data validity
allows others to see conclusions to the study more easily
why is the method not judged for its validity?
researchers often do not explain who they came to their themes
