The Xylem Flashcards
What is transpiration?
the evaporation of water from leaves, through the stomata
What is cohesion?
water molecules stick together bc they are polar
What is the xylem?
transports water and minerals
directon - up only
hollow tube made of dead cells and has no cell walls
What is cohesion in xylem or plants?
transpiration of water through stomata creates low pressure at top of xylem
water in the xylem is pulled up creating tension bc water molecules stick to each other by cohesion
water molecules are sucked up to the leaves (like a straw)
What factors affect rate of transpiration?
temperature - high temp increase the rate of transpiration
light - more stomata open when there is more light which increases transpiration
humidity and wind - affect the water vapour gradient - steeper the vapour gradient, the faster the rate of transpiration
