The Working Model Of Memory Flashcards
Who proposed the working model of memory?
Baddeley and Hitch in 1974
What is the working model of memory and what does it do?
It’s a detailed explanation of short-term memory and it describes how we temporarily store and manipulate information.
What are the five components of the working model of memory?
The sensory register Visual spatial sketch pad The central executive The phonological loop The episodic buffer
What does central executive do?
It allocates slave systems to tasks – allocating attention, it has a very limited capacity.
What does the visual spatial sketch pad day?
Stores visual and spatial information
Visual cache – stores visual data
Inner scribe – record arrangement of objects in the visual field
What does the phonological loop do?
It deals with auditory information and preserve the order
The phonological store - stores words
The articulatory control - allows maintenance rehearsal
What does the episodic buffer day?
Newly added in 2000 this is a temporary store for information
It integrates visual, spatial and verbal information while maintaining time sequencing.
What are the evaluation points for the working model of memory?
- there is a lack of clarity over the central executive which is a key component
+ Baddeley et al. in 1975 so it’s hard to do to visual tasks television past and auditory task supports the idea of separate stores – dual task performance
+ KF had poor auditory memory but good visual memory supports the idea of different stores.
