The Cognitive Interview Flashcards
What was the cognitive interview?
It’s a procedure based on psychological understanding of memory to maximise accuracy
What are the four components of the cognitive interview?
Report everything
Context reinstatement
Reverse the order
Change the perspective
Why did they include report everything?
Seemingly trivial information may be significant or trigger other memories
Why did they include context reinstatement?
By returning to the crime scene in their mind the witness may reduce the likelihood of context dependent forgetting
Why did they include reverse the order?
By recalling in the different chronological order it prevents expectations affecting the recall and also stop lying
Why did they include changing the perspective?
By recalling the incident from another’s perspective it prevents the influence of expectations and schema on recall
Who introduced to the enhanced cognitive interview?
Fisher et al. in 1987
What changes were made when the cognitive interview was enhanced?
Some additional elements were added and there was more of a focus on social dynamics of interaction.
What extra components were added to the enhanced cognitive interview?
Reduce eyewitness anxiety
Minimise distractions
Get witnesses to speak slowly
Ask open ended questions
What are the evaluation points for the cognitive interview?
- it is time-consuming and need special training to be effective
+ there is considerable support for enhanced cognitive interview effectiveness - evidence of the cognitive interview maybe iffy because is collected in relation to different forms of CI
